ABOUT THE INITIATIVE
WHAT IS MALARIA?
Malaria is a severe and potentially fatal disease caused by a parasite which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Nearly 50% of the world's population is impacted by malaria; pregnant women and young children are the most vulnerable to the disease.
According to the World Health Organization, in 2020, there were 241 million cases of malaria worldwide -- more than 8.2 million of those cases were in Angola resulting in more than 15,900 deaths. Malaria thrives in Sub-Saharan Africa due to the tropical weather and scarce resources to control its spread.
Last year, the Quéssua Methodist hospital saw 19,083 malaria cases of which more than half were children (1,590 cases per month). Interventions against malaria, such as bed nets treated with insecticide, are less effective as mosquitoes become resistant to the chemicals.

AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION
USING TECHNOLOGY TO END MALARIA
The Global Missions ministry of the Florida Conference is partnering with Dr. Ben Jacob, a professor at the USF College of Public Health to use innovative technology solutions to help end malaria in Quessua, Angola.
Jacob is using drone technology, artificial intelligence, and satellite data to identify breeding areas of the female mosquitoes that carry malaria. Once identified, the aquatic larval habitat is destroyed. Wherever this cost effective program has been implemented in countries in Africa and Asia, within 60 days of treatment there have been few to zero cases of malaria reported. This coming year we’ll have an opportunity to make a real dent in the number of malaria cases in the Quéssua area and beyond when Dr. Jacobs joins a team from the Florida Conference traveling to Angola. He will stay at the Mission site for close to a month to establish and train field teams for seasonal maintainable malaria control. |
